The Way of the Quiet Heart: Photography As Meditation
To become adept at the practice of meditation, one must still the mind and reach a state of relaxed concentration. Becoming adept at the art of photography involves these very same skills. Drawing upon such diverse influences as Taoism, Zen Buddhism, and even Thomas Merton, this workshop will demonstrate how photography can become not just an artistic pursuit but an important part of your spiritual practice. This is not just a photography class, but a course on seeing and becoming receptive to the moment. To fully participate in the workshop, participants should be familiar with the technical aspects of photography as well as their equipment. Therefore, the workshop will offer an optional pre-session in Week One, The Technique of Photography. This pre-session will cover the basics of photography ? focus, exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO settings, etc. Participants are encouraged to take their cameras to this pre-session. Week Two, The Spirit of Photography, consists of brief lecture followed by group photography exercises in the local park. In addition to their cameras, participants should wear comfortable shoes as we will be walking to and from the park to engage in group photography exercises. Workshop Schedule
